With the advent of the computer and the ability to write programs which dictate and execute actions which can be translated into movement and into games we now are in an age of electronic games.
Specifically, microprocessors are to the computer what the heart is to the human being. With it came the capacity to provide various functions for small items such as a hand calculator, a wrist watch or an electronic game.
Electronic games can come in the format of a handheld device, a CD that is played on a television set or a computer or a freestanding game. They typically test and develop ones hand to eye coordination.
Over the years these games have become more and more complex and sophisticated where many people can play at a time or where the
viewing has a panorama effect. Also the game can go on for many hours these days. The internet games can involve thousands of people in an activity that goes on day after day and which is fiercely competitive. These games were a billion dollar industry in 2007.
The subject of these games can be warfare, sports, gambling, cards, chess, etc. Someone has to program these games and there are schools where one can learn to be a programmer for such games.
It is not just kids who play these games. There are magazines such as EGM (Electronic Gaming Magazine) which is a monthly magazine and which reach millions of readers where the average income of readers is apparently roughly $85,000 and who play electronic games an average of 19 hours a month. This magazine communicates at the level of these games and it appears to be a whole culture of its own.
Electronic games can be a source of learning and education such as increasing perception. They can be a tool for learning subjects like business. Some schools try to ban them while others show them as the hottest trend in school and public libraries. There are varying views on the pros and cons of these games but the one thing that could be said with certainty is that they are firmly embedded in our culture and they are here to stay. What form they will take in the future will depend on various factors.
On the internet there is tons of information and direction related to these games. There are things like the Electronic Game Directory which is a yellow pages for these games.
